Definitions: Mist and Spray

Mist and spray can be included in the main family of aerosol that are suspended particulate, either solid or liquid, which is slow to settle bt gravity. The particle sizes is from the submicrometer range up to 10 or 20 µm.

Mists are fine suspended liquid dispersions usually resulting from condensation and ranging upward in particle size from around 0,1 µm.

Spray refers to entrained liquid droplets. The deoplets may be entrained from atomizing process (i.e. absorption towers). Size will range from the finest 10 µm uo to a particle whose terminal setling velocity is equal to the entraining gas velocity (if some setling volume is provided).

Wet Electrostatic Precipitators (WESP)


Wet Electrostatic Precipitators (WESP) offer efficient emissions control for sub-micron particulate, heavy metals, acid mist, oil mist.

Process description:

Hot contaminated gas from the production lines are cooled to full saturation and pre-cleaned from all particles larger than 2 microns in a special un-clogging scrubber. The scrubber creates a turbulent layer of fine mist which accomplishes the mass transfer of toxic gases and the capture of large particles onto the mist bubbles. The turbulent layer provides good mass transfer and offers efficient gas cooling below adiabatic saturation together with good absorption of soluble compounds.

FIBERWIND Candels - Mist Eliminators


FIBERWIND™ type mist eliminators of AWS are specifically made to remove mainly submicron liquid or soluble solid particles from an air or gas stream. They are similar to mesh pad mist eliminators except that the filaments are extremely fine fibers, randomly but very closely spaced.

FIBERWIND™ mist eliminators of AWS are constructed in a cylindrical form (candle filters) between two concentric open mesh bed formers into which special fibers of various materials are either densely packed or wound or wrapped.

FIBERWIND™ mist eliminators are installed vertically on a tube sheet either in hanging or standing configuration. Because of the vertical disposition, liquid accumulating on the fibers is moved horizontally through the fiber bed by the drag of the gases and drains by gravity down the downstream side to the bottom of the fiber bed where it is collected and either returned to the process or removed as a waste.

Using extensive experience in industrial gas inlet conditions, fiber bed design, materials of construction and corrosion resistance, AWS can optimize the mist eliminator design for the highest efficiencies, lowest pressure drop and longest effective life while balancing cost and benefits in today’s cautious economic conditions. AWS engineers will work closely with the customer to determine the FIBERWIND product that best meets their needs.

FIBERWIND™ type BM ( Brownian Movement )
AWS Fiberwind This type of mist eliminator works at fiber bed velocities of about 0.10-0.15 m/sec depending on specific processes. The collection efficiency will be essentially 100% for all particles 3 micron and larger and 99.5% or more, for all particles smaller than 3 micron. FIBERWIND™ type BM have no turndown problems: thus the lower the fiberbed velocity, the higher the collection efficiency, especially for submicron particles.

FIBERWIND™ type IM ( Impaction Movement )
This type of mist eliminator works at fiber bed velocities of about 1.0-1.5 m/sec depending on specific processes.The collection efficiency will be essentially 100% for all particles 3 micron and larger and 90-97% for all particles 1.0 micron and larger.

TIDEVANE Mist Eliminators


Fields of Application:

TIDEVANE™ type mist eliminator types are widely used in industry to separate liquid droplets from gas streams. In all the applications where a contact between liquid and flowing gas is involved, tiny mist droplets are carried away with the gas.

TIDEVANE™ type mist eliminators of AWS are specifically made to remove mainly liquid droplets together with solid particles from an air or gas stream. Unlike filters, which hold particles indefinitely, TIDEVANE™ mist eliminators of AWS separate fine droplets and drain the liquid away from the gas stream.

AES Tidevane

TIDEVANE™ mist eliminators of AWS are made of zig-zag baffles that cause the mist laden gas to change direction quickly as it flows through the oriented baffles or blades. The liquid droplets, due to their momentum, impact on the baffles and are separated from the gas flow as they are unable to follow the gas streamlines.

TIDEVANE™ are inertial separators because liquid droplets are removed due to their inertial momentum.

TIDEVANE™ mist eliminators collect essentially 100% of all particles greater than 8 to 40 microns in diameter, depending on design parameters and operating conditions.

Lube Oil Vent Mist Eliminator


AWS can contribute to the solution of many pollution control problems caused by oil mist. The lubricated rotating parts of all gas and steam turbines, turbo compressors and vacuum pumps generate a visible oil plume which is to be removed from the air vented to atmosphere. The installation of a simple but very effective mist eliminator on the lube oil vent solves the pollution problem and, by recovering the expensive oil, pays off the mist eliminator cost in a short period of time.

The AWS LOV mist eliminator system is our owned technology option developed to provide turbines and compressor manufacturers with a choice of solutions to address the main regulatory requirements .

LOV mist eliminator is a modular lube oil mist eliminator system, providing a safe, flexible and economical process for the treatment of lube oil mist. Lube oil mist treatment with a LOV AWS system is achieved through a simple and efficient one stage process. The lube oil mist is passed through a brownian movement candle filter in special fiber.

Standard Features

The core part of our filter is the special inert glass fiber which is densely packed inside two concentric metal screens.

The peculiarity of the fibers and their specific density are responsible for a removal efficiency of up to 99.99% for all particles down to 0.1 micron.

Measurements made on installed mist eliminators have demonstrated residual oil mist contents far below 5 mg/m3 in the air being vented to atmosphere.

On top of the extremely high efficiency, the AWS mist eliminator can combine a very low pressure drop which remains constant with time and a maintenance free operating life of several years. The collected oil mist is continuously discharged from the filter and recirculated back to the lube oil tank.

The pressure drop of the coalescing mist eliminator of AWS is very low, usually in the range of a few mbar which can avoid the installation of a sucking blower downstream of the mist eliminator.

Virtually, the mist eliminator can be sized to achieve a very minimum pressure drop according to customer’s request. The lower the requested pressure drop requirements, the larger will be the installed coalescing area.

Equipment supply and installation

AWS can supply the simple mist eliminator or, according to customer’s requirements, a skid mounted unit which includes by-pass pipe, control valves, instrumentation, blower and motor.

For installations where room availability is a problem, AWS can provide tailor made solutions.

Catalytic DeNOx Systems


Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system for flue gas denitrification consists of a NOx reduction process on a catalytic bed using ammonia or urea as reagent. The right operating temperature is secured through a gas-gas heat exchanger and an external heat source. Flue gas is fed through the catalytic bed, where NOx is reduced to form nitrogen and water. The SCR reactor may be charged with an additional layer for toxic organic compound oxidation.

The detailed reaction steps are expressed as follows:

  1. Transport of NH3 from gaseous flow to the catalyst surface and adsorption on the catalyst
  2. Diffusion of NO or NO2 from gaseous flow, contact with the adsorbed NH3, reaction and diffusion of the gaseous products to the flue gas flow
  3. Diffusion of oxygen (O2) to the catalyst and regeneration of the active center of catalyst

NOx Removal Plants on Engine Applications

AWS ’s Selective Catalyst on the engine applications present some specific characteristics to enhance its performances and reliability.

The SCR reactor may be charged with an additional layer for toxic organic compound oxidation or for CO oxidation. An additional different layer can also remove through filtration and surface oxidation the organic particulate content. As standard the AWS corp.’s SCR is structured with a fosfour trap especially for the Biofuel applications.

What are activated carbons?
